It's hard to say exactly without a time machine - I do agree with your point that they succeeded in spite of these decisions that resulted in said foot-shooting. But, if they prioritized the tech debt or usability or scalability or whatever else, would they have been as successful? I want to say they'd have been even more successful if they made more "correct" decisions, but I can't say with certainty!
